6 Lessons Learned After 6 Years In LA

Six years ago, we embarked on a crazy, terrifying, wonderful journey of living in another part of the country… California!

In 2016, my family & I relocated from a suburb in Minnesota to just north of Los Angeles, CA. It’s been one of the biggest learning experiences of my life!

And in case you’re thinking of making a similar move, here are 6 things that are valuable to know, 6 years in:

1. The First 3 Years Are Grad School Vibes:

Moving to another city is like enrolling in a three-year grad school program — challenging, demanding, but ultimately rewarding about 3 years in.

I didn’t feel at home instantly, and that’s okay. My advice would be to be patient with yourself, and gradually build your life. Don’t rush the process, a change this big just takes time.

2. Sunglasses Are Not Optional:

Confession: In Minnesota, I never used to wear sunglasses.

In California they’re not just a fashion statement, but a necessity. Now I have so many, and I love them all. Why didn’t I love them before?!
The same goes with sunscreen & sun hats!

3. Goodbye Cold Weather Tolerance:

When I lived in Minnesota, it was considered normal to walk barefoot on frozen snowy ice outside just to grab an Amazon package.

Fast forward to 6 years later, after living in a place with virtually no winter, I am ashamed to say I actually turn my electric blanket on when it drops below, like, 70 degrees at night.

I don’t know what’s happened to me. I’ve completely lost my tolerance for cold weather! Oops.

4. Drastic Personal Change:

Living in a new location can be a transformative experience. And I’m not just talking about acquiring a taste for avocado toast and quality burritos.

You’ll learn, grow, and evolve in ways you never expected. Moving to a new place seems to accelerate how quickly you discover previously dormant parts of yourself.

Embracing these lessons will always make you a better (& happier) person.

5. Staying Grounded In La La Land:

In a place where everyone is trying to be someone, it’s very easy to lose yourself in the pursuit. Focus on finding your own magic lane.

“A focused fool can accomplish more than a distracted genius.” Alex Hormozi

Staying grounded (via ocean visits and nature hikes) has been the best way I’ve nurtured my creativity and thrived among so many distractions.
Also, don’t get lost in the party scene. Stay focused!

6. Where You Live Is Your Ultimate Canvas:

Remember that where you live is what you make of it!
No one can define the experience for you, you get to define it for yourself.

For me personally, I’ve loved the drastic change in weather (i.e. no winter), and the people and culture.

I also love the ocean, the mountains, and the really good burritos. 🌯
