When you understand the difference between Creators and Influencers, you will instantly benefit from knowing what role you naturally play, and that can change your online life and business …forever.
Why? Because Creators and Influencers are complimentary and powerfully potent when paired. Simply put, the best Creators I know have learned to cultivate or surround themselves with Influencer energy, and the same goes for Influencers who consistency seek out and cultivate Creator energy.

Personally, I am naturally more of a Creator. This means that I can intentionally seek to team up with Influencers more often because they have a skill set that is different (but complimentary) to my own. This helps me in countless ways. Just to name a few: I more deeply understand the ideal client for my business, and I know how my energy is best utilized in creative projects. See how instantly valuable and actionable these insights are?

Creator vs Influencer: What’s The Difference?

You’ll need to know if you are naturally more of a Creator or more of an Influencer, because these terms have different meanings.
The difference between them lies in the intention and the results.

  • A Creatorsintention is to create content, and it results in a piece of digital content (video, photo, story) that can be used for marketing, etc. Creators love to make original content; they spend hours creating something unique, something you won’t find anywhere else.
  • An Influencers’ intention is to share content, and it results in raising brand awareness for those products/habits/lifestyles, selling them, and in general, creating lasting hype. They are the people who have a lot of followers, trust, and respect from their community.

How are Creators and Influencers Complimentary?

Both Creators and Influencers are talented storytellers, but they are using different tools of expression. In other words: Creators are still influencing, and Influencers are still creating. It’s just not their respective primary focus. For example, a Creator could be using Final Cut Pro to create a video to tell a story, while an Influencer could be YouTube live-streaming to tell a story. They are both creating and influencing, but their intentions and results differ. So, how do you know which one you are?

3 Questions to Ask Yourself

The best way to determine if you are a Creator or an Influencer is to look at your content and ask yourself if you are creating content for your own audience, creating content for someone else’s audience, and if you’re creating content to promote a product. Also, what of those three do you enjoy most?

1. Do I create content for my own audience?
2. Do I create content for others’ audience?
3. Do I review or promote products?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. It’s something you need to think about and answer as honestly as possible. Your unique answer will determine how you build your platform, grow your influence, and grow your business!
