So, you’ve finally found the perfect video editor for your YouTube channel. Now what? 🎬

When you find the right video editor, it just clicks. You’ll be able to take your creative projects to the next level. You also will find yourself having more time and creative energy that you can re-direct to other areas.

After nearly 7 years of editing videos professionally for YouTube, this is BY FAR the most-asked question I get:

Do you have any tips for filming videos that will be edited by a video editor?”

My answer: Yes! I’ve noticed that many successful YouTube creators use 3 very simple steps that maximize how the video turns out:

  1. They plan out shots & record in shorter bursts.
  2. They give specific examples of the editing style they want.
  3. They organize footage & send notes on the finished product.

By following these 3 steps, you will save yourself tons of time, effort and many future revision rounds.

Step #1: Plan Your Shots & Make Them Shorter

The more you can plan your (short) shots, the easier it will be.

For example, if you are filming a video with 3 main talking points, shoot each point separately. If you are shooting b-roll shots, shoot each b-roll subject separately instead of all in one. Why? This will save you time and make it easier to review and select the best takes

Also, by limiting what you shoot, you actually create an opportunity to capture higher-quality shots.

Step #2: Give Examples of Editing Styles You Like

How do you want your videos to be edited?

Give your editor examples of the editing style you like or be specific about what you want in the edit. The more info they have, the better.

More specificity always leads to better edits.

Step #3: Organize Footage & Send “The Vision”

What’s your vision for the final product?

The “footage handoff” can be easy and effortless if your footage is organized and the overall vision is communicated. During filming, write down any notes that come to mind for the finished edit. Make sure to send any notes that help communicate the vision you have for the final product.

Trust me, this step alone will save you hundreds of revision rounds!

I’ve learned that the goal long-term is to actually see these 3 steps as ongoing practices.

Use them to build long-term habits that lead to more ease and flow.
The more you practice, the less effort it gradually takes.

And the better the final result!
